There's just so much science, nature, music, art, technology, storytelling and assorted good stuff out there that my kids (and maybe your kids) haven't seen. It's most likely not stuff that was made for them...

But we don't underestimate kids around here.

The kind of light that we see things in changes how we see those things. This reef tank is shot under actinic light, which not only “will facilitate photosynthesis or stimulate light sensitive species,” but it changes how the corals look, as well. From liveaquaria.com:

The light spectrum, or Kelvin rating, of aquarium lighting will also alter the appearance of corals… For example, bulbs that emit light heavy in the actinic blue range bring out dazzling fluorescent colors not visible under full spectrum daylight bulbs. While different hobbyists prefer different combinations of light spectrums, a typical lighting system for a reef aquarium consists of 50% white light with a high Kelvin rating and 50% blue, actinic light.

Being hailed as Google Street View for the Great Barrier Reef, the Catlin Seaview Survey will begin a comprehensive study of the natural world wonder in September of 2012. Using a special “squidlike” camera to capture 360-degree photos, the survey will be observing the effects of climate change on this very sensitive underwater ecosystem, as well as opening up the reef to the public. From their site: 

The images from the expedition, when stitched together, will allow scientists and the public at large to explore the reef remotely through any device connected to the Internet. It will allow them to choose a location, dip underwater, look around and go off on a virtual dive. It has the potential of engaging people with the life and science of our oceans in a way that’s not been possible until now. It is a very exciting time.

A 2009 pilot project in Fiji, Coral Gardening is a process of transplanting and growing coral in ways that help make damaged coral reefs healthy again. This clip is from the BBC’s Fragile Paradise, part of their series South Pacific.

Phillipe Coustaeau and the team dive in the Red Sea, one of the warmest seas in the world. Despite the warm temperatures, coral reefs flourish with their flourescent pigmentation putting on an amazing show of technicolour. Fantastic clip taken from the BBC Oceans series.
