This Saipancakes breakfast tutorial mixes entomology with pancake-making, minus any actual edible insects. Using heat and time to brown the bug outlines, father and former high school math teacher Nathan Shields draws caterpillars and beetles with pancake batter in 12-ounce wide-mouth squeeze bottles and some help from his family.
Though any thinned pancake batter can work for drawings, Shields’ recipe is made with three cups of flour, two tablespoons of baking powder, two teaspoons of salt, and two tablespoons of sugar. Combine the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.
In a separate bowl, mix together half a cup of applesauce and three tablespoons of melted butter (or a suitable substitute). Once that’s well combined, gradually add 2 and 3/4 cups of soymilk while stirring continuously. An electric mixer may be needed to create a super smooth batter.

Optional: To more easily define your illustrations, brown pancake batter with three shades of hot chocolate mix. File under: breakfast inspiration.
