How to turn garden clippings into striking insect sculptures

How does Montreal-based designer Raku Inoue create his striking ‘Natura Insects’ series of plant sculptures on Instagram? It starts with collecting and sorting interesting materials from his garden, going with the flow of creating without speed or pressure, picking the insect or creature he wants to create, and then building thoughtfully but freely.

In the spirit of the Japanese tradition of ikebana, Inoue tries to not use glue or tape, carefully arranging each clipping from nature and photographing it from above when it’s complete. In this CBC Arts video about Reikan Creations, above, he explains that “it’s like a small puzzle. I just try to find the pieces.”

We’d love to see your own insects or other creatures from plants in your yard or park. Be sure to share them with us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
