Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, a performance by The Royal Ballet

In 2017, The Royal Ballet followed Alice down a rabbit hole as she fell into a fantastical world. In this performance from the company’s production of Christopher Wheeldon‘s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, principal dancer Lauren Cuthbertson stumbles upon the unruly Mad Hatter, played by Steven McRae. Curiosity and chaos take over as Cuthbertson’s Alice attempts to make sense of the scene at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.

But the ballet does not avoid the darker undercurrents of Lewis Carroll’s story: a nightmarish kitchen, an eerily disembodied Cheshire Cat and the unhinged tea party are all here in vivid detail. The delicious result shows The Royal Ballet at its best, bringing together world-class dance with enchanting family entertainment.

This behind-the-scenes look at the production includes interviews with Wheeldon and the dancers to “discuss why Lewis Carroll’s novel makes the perfect ballet.”
