Making Sand Swim with Fluidization

From the Ri Channel‘s View the Tales from the Prep Room series, this is how you make a fluidized bed of sand: Making Sand Swim with Ri Demo Technician Andy Marmery. Watch how these solids suddenly behave a lot like a fluid as air escapes between the sand particles, causing them to float.

Aided by a troop of floating objects Andy dusts off the fluidised bed, a classic piece of Ri demonstration kit handed down from the 1950s.

It’s definitely one of the more strange and fascinating demonstrations that we’ve seen.

This Webby award-winning video collection exists to help teachers, librarians, and families spark kid wonder and curiosity. TKSST features smarter, more meaningful content than what's usually served up by YouTube's algorithms, and amplifies the creators who make that content.
