The Big Bounce, the Big Bulk, and the Big Black Hole Bang

The Big Bang Theory suggests that everything started from an incredibly small, dense, and hot point. Some scientists are now exploring what happened before the Big Bang.

“The Big Bang Theory is the origin story of our universe. Of us,” astrophysicist Dr. Josie Peters begins. “Before that, there was nothing… right?”

As theoretical physicist Professor Michio Kaku notes, “if you think about it a while, you begin to realize it all depends on how you define β€˜nothing’.”

the brief reaction of two 'branes
One theory proposes a cyclical loop called the Big Bounce, where the universe expands and collapses but avoids reaching infinity. Another ideaβ€”the Big Bulkβ€”involves multiple dimensions and suggests that the Big Bang resulted from the collision of two membranes (‘branes) in a higher dimension.

Lastly, there’s a theory inspired by evolution, suggesting that the universe is born inside a black hole, with each black hole acting as a potential starting point for a new universe.

So what really came before the big bang? Is there any way for us to know where we come from? Dr. Peters walks us through the Weird Scienceβ€”specifically these three mind-bending theoriesβ€”in the BBC Studios video above.
